6 Steps For Removing a Cast Iron Tub

A cast iron tub is a durable and long-lasting piece of bathroom fixtures that can last for many years. However, there may come a time when you need to remove it for various reasons, such as remodeling or replacing it with a newer tub. Removing a cast iron tub can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done successfully.

Before you begin the removal process, it is important to gather all the necessary tools and materials, including a utility knife, pliers, a hammer or Sledge hammer, a pry bar, a drill, a saw, a screwdriver, a hacksaw, and a level. Additionally, you will need a protective gear, such as gloves, goggles, and a dust mask, to ensure your safety while working.

Step 1: Turn off the Water and Drain the Tub The first step in removing a cast iron tub is to turn off the water supply to the bathroom. This will prevent any water from flowing into the tub while you are working on it. Once you have turned off the water supply, turn on the faucet and let the water drain out of the tub.

Step 2: Disconnect the Plumbing and Electrical Connections Once the water has drained from the tub, you will need to disconnect the plumbing and electrical connections. If your cast iron tub has a drain, you will need to disconnect the drain pipes and remove the overflow cover. You will also need to remove any electrical connections, such as lights or fans, that are connected to the tub.

Step 3: Remove the Surrounding Tiles or Panels Once the plumbing and electrical connections have been disconnected, you will need to remove the tiles or panels that surround the tub. If your tub is surrounded by tiles, you will need to use a utility knife to cut the grout and then remove the tiles one by one. If your tub is surrounded by panels, you will need to use a pry bar to remove them.

Step 4: Cut the Caulk Once you have removed the surrounding tiles or panels, you will need to cut the caulk that is holding the tub in place. Use a utility knife to cut the caulk around the edges of the tub.

Step 5: Remove the Tub Once the caulk has been cut, you will be ready to remove the tub. Use a pry bar to gently lift the tub away from the wall. If the tub is heavy, you may need to enlist the help of a friend or family member to help you remove it. Place the tub on a flat surface, such as a dolly or a piece of plywood, to prevent it from damaging the floor.

Step 6: Dispose of the Tub Once the tub has been removed, you will need to dispose of it. Most cast iron tubs are heavy, so it is best to hire a professional such as Pine State Hauling and Junk Removal, to help you transport and dispose of the tub. If you are unable to hire a professional, you can rent a dumpster or ask for help from friends or family members.

How did we remove the Cast Iron Tub?

Pine State Hauling and Junk Removal received a call to remove a very heavy tub from a nice lady located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The lady originally though the tub was cast iron but later sent a text message explaining that her husband thought it was steel. We informed her that no matter what it is we will figure out a way of getting it out of her basement. If it is steel it will be much lighter than cast iron, relatively speaking. The next step for us was to take a ride over and evaluate the situation.

The guys at Pine State hauling and Junk Removal asked if they could take a seldge hammer to the tub to see if it was steel or cast iron. The lady said to go ahead and we took a 10 pound sledge hammer to one side of it and although it took a couple swings it eventually broke and we knew it was cast iron and decided to move forward with a sledge hammer as that is the quickest and most efficient way of taking down a cast iron tub. So we proceeded to smash the rest of the tub and take it out in multiple pieces and we were done within 20 minutes.

In conclusion, removing a cast iron tub can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done successfully. It is important to gather all the necessary tools and materials, disconnect the plumbing and electrical connections, remove the surrounding tiles or panels, cut the caulk, and dispose of the tub in a safe and responsible manner. By following these steps, you can successfully remove a cast iron tub and make room for a new bathroom fixture.
